Safe Kids Week: How Parents Can Help Reduce Head Injuries in Playgrounds

As part of Safe Kids Week, Island Health is raising awareness about concussion prevention in children. 


At a recent pop-up event held at Victoria General Hospital, injury prevention expert Aguiar noted that while helmets are important for activities like biking, she stresses close supervision on playgrounds to help prevent falls that can lead to head injuries.


Amelia Smit, a consultant with Island Health’s trauma services, said they are seeing more concussion reports, likely due to increased awareness and recognition of symptoms.
